How many of you remember the old television commercial that made the line “I told two friends” famous? Well believe it or not, that is one of the most successful ways for small businesses to market: word of mouth referrals. If everyone you know tells two people about your service and they tell two people and so on and so on, the growth is expediential. Let's have a look and see the math, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, Wow!... after 10 times 512 people have heard about your product.

Now let's have a look at this from a larger perspective, we all know people who belong to clubs, business associations, chamber of commerce, etc. If you had a chance to meet with 10 people and tell them about your product let's see what happens--10, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280, 2560, 5120. Sounds fantastic!
We all know not everyone will buy, but looking at the advertising averages, let's say 2% of those who hear about your product contact you for more details and 50% of those actually buy something. So we are now looking at 1% of those who heard about your product. 1% of 512 is 5 sales, 1% of 5120 is 51 sales.
Of course this is all over a period of time and is not a magic bullet for instant success, but over time the more people you talk to one-on-one about your product, the more people you will see coming to you for your services. So get the message out and start telling your two friends about what you do and what services and products you represent.
