 | Building a site that sells |
We often get asked the question, “I have a website and my website statistics tell me I get visitors but I am not making any sales, what’s wrong?”. Believe it or not this question not only applies to websites but stores and kiosks as well. There is a multi-billion dollar industry that supports the retail store industry trying to improve the visitor to sales ratio.
We can take several good points from the brick and mortar retail industry and apply it to websites.

First Appearances:
Your at the mall and you know what your looking for, lets say men’s clothing so you go the mall directory and find that all the stores are listed by category. You see there are 5 stores in the men’s fashion category. Which one do you pick? Probably a name you recognize or you look on the map and see where they are in the mall and start your search.
The first store you find on the list is dark, cluttered, and loud music is blaring at you. While standing at the door you can’t see what you are looking for, do you go in and browse or do you walk on to the next store? The next store which is well lit, products are clearly displayed, atmosphere is pleasant, and you can actually see what your looking for. Guess which store I would go into.
Get your Product / Service seen:
Well Websites are the same. Your site should be clean and not cluttered, and no blaring music. Make the design appropriate, if you selling motorcycle parts don’t get all artsy, if your selling art, don’t make the site more powerful than the art you are selling.
What you are selling should be prominently displayed, with all the pertinent information accompanied by one or two pictures of the product. On the web you must use text to describe your product as the customer cannot see and touch the product. Text is also very important because that is what people use on the web to find you through search engines and directories.
Place complimentary product links under your main product. Please do not clutter your Product / Service pages with advertising from other sources like banner ads or Google type ads, if you must put other advertising on your pages, put it where it will not distract from your product or service. Make sure that the links that are not on your site open new pages you don’t want to loose that customer you worked so hard to get to your site in the first place.
Use of words:
There are literally thousands of articles, books and self-acclaimed experts on the use of words in marketing. Look at what the professionals do in magazines and television, what words are prevalent, what are the hook words like “Sale”, “Free”, “New”, “Improved”, and “Discount” these are the words that catch the prospective customers attention. Used properly and sparingly they can be very useful in promoting a product or service.
