 What’s in a Name ?

Hosting NewsHow many of you have enjoyed a Crock Shake or a Crock Sandwich? What image do you have in your head when you hear the word “Budget”? These are two examples of how names can identify you and your product. McDonald's founder Ray Crock knew that not to many people would buy a crock of anything except maybe butter, so he kept the name of the first restaurant that he bought, McDonald’s is now a world known name. I wonder if “Crock’s” would have made it? Budget car rental broke into the very competitive car rental agency using their name to give the image of an agency that would fit your “Budget”.

When you started your business I am sure you thought long and hard about what to call it, maybe you even went through several names until you hit on one that your customers responded to. Did you spend your hard earned money to have a research company come up with a name for your company? Whichever way you chose your business name you then registered it with your local government and tax agencies. That name is now yours until your registration runs out.

Domain names are the same they must be chosen with care. Your domain name is your Internet identifier, your website Internet address, and your “Branding Name” on the Internet. When you acquire a Domain Name make sure that your legal entity is shown as the owner of the domain name, if someone else registers the domain name for you make sure you are shown as the owner and that you get all invoices, userid, and passwords so you can manage the domain name and receive expiry notifications.

Remember to use your domain name on all your correspondence and advertising, the more people that see your domain name the more people will come looking for your website.

You will work hard to build your Internet presence and market your website. Take care that your Domain Name registration is kept current, keep the registration email active so you get your expiry notifications. Make sure that the emails from your registrar will pass through any spam filters that you or your email provider have, check you spam capture mailbox to make sure you don’t miss it.

Thank you,
